Next Big Thing Blog Hop!

So there’s this amazing little meme called the Next Big Thing Blog Hop, and I was tagged by Dana M. Baird, she of the Spell Keeper Legends and this is her entry. This is simplicity itself: each tagged author blogs answers to the same set of questions about their current work in progress and then passes the torch to some other great authors who will do the same.

Because this fell over the Christmas/Yule holidays, I couldn’t ask around first, so this is as much a surprise to them as it is for me.  Sorry guys (not really). Here then is what I have in store for 2013.

What is the working title of your next book?

The next book undergoing editing is The Cat Dragged Inn. I’ve been chasing this novel around for years, and when I wasn’t wading projects for the Great Lakes Association of Horror Writers, final edits for Isle of Shadows, and working on my new movie project, I covertly launched attacks on both Never and The Caretaker. I probably put in more work The Caretaker. It’s been the working title for years.

Where did the idea come from for the book?

The idea was born from the merging of two news items. I read in a short blurb “New In Brief” column, a woman had been pulled over on a highway along one of the Western deserts for a rear obstructed view. Her car had been full of her life – refuse, furniture, bags of clothes – and a suitcase containing the corpses of her two children who’d died of CO poisoning from living in a storage facility. The other came from reading about Victorian Baby Farming. I out two and two together and came up with The Caretaker.

What genre does your book fall under?

I believe this one falls under psychological horror/thriller. It’s horrific but the terror comes from the characters very human actions, not necessarily from a supernatural Big Bad.

What is the synopsis or blurb for this book?

Starting over from abuse and addiction, Joey begins her new life with new job and new baby and is thrilled to discover inexpensive daycare. Her new find turns to terror as the new sitter is far less than word of mouth suggests and far more than the children in her care can handle.

What actors would you choose to play your characters in a movie rendition?

I never consider movies as the next step for my books and I don’t think I could so readily box my characters in that way.

Will your book be self-published or represented by an agency?

I’m old school and will continue on the hunt for agented representation. Self-publishing is just not for me.

How long did it take you to write the first draft of your manuscript?

When I get rolling, probably a year all told. I don’t work on projects straight through, not because I get bored or get discouraged or hit blocks, but because lots of characters and projects pull me into different directions. For the way my life is running now, this actually works for me. Sure it takes me longer to finish books but they’re done on my schedule.

Who or what inspired you to write this book?

The feels like the “where did your idea come from question”. Writing inspires me to write this book.

What other books would you compare this story to within your genre?

Funny thing – I don’t read a lot in my genre (horror). When I read, I tackle urban fantasy or forensic procedurals. I haven’t come across a story like this to compare it to, so I would hope it’s as good as any book in the Top Twenty someone might read in a good year.

What else about your book might pique the reader’s interest?

It’s a good Detroit story, with a strong female lead, and a crazy person. Crazy is fun to read, especially when it’s happening to someone else.

Just this fox. I'm a writer of horror and dark fantasy. I totally don't brag about it. The latter statement is an utter lie.
