Cube farm!

This content has been archived. It may no longer be relevant

I can’t tell you where I work or on what floor or how many people inhabit this particular floor or any of that stuff. I’ve learned from learned people like Heather that blogging about work is stupid.  Plus what I do is rather sensitive, so I’ll never talk about what I do or where I work.  I just won’t.

I will tell you that it’s an awesome job that someone like me (re: college dropout) wouldn’t have thought she could get. Yet, I have it and today it got metric tons better.

I got my very own cubical (let the squee-ing commence).  Now before you start groaning and rolling your eyes, realize this – for the previous 11 years (skip a year for unemployment and retail) I sat behind a desk greeting people as they came in the door.  My space was decorated in a style befitting me, but it was open and I had no real privacy.  Even when I was upgraded to an “office” it was still an open plan and I still had to greet people when they came in the main door.

When I started this job back in May, I was seated in a communal temp/training room with (at the start) ten other people.  We were eventually whittled down to five, and then four, and then just me. The other temps went to other departments or were moved to other rooms, and I was left in that great big room all by wee self.  I had huge windows and lots of space to spread out and it was quiet.

In the past few weeks there had been grumblings from others that wanted to use (what I had come to refer to as) my room to do more training. I was effectively being evicted.  My department had no cubes currently available and there was a question as to where I would go.  My team leader tried to keep me with the team, but today I was packed up and rolled up to the upper floor, where I sit now in a comfy cubical spread all nicely.

This is a very good thing.

Upside: I can walk up a few flight of stairs every day, and lord knows I need it.

Upside: I am close to the kitchenette and there is a fridge and I no longer risk salmonella from room temperature Thai.

Upside: the bathrooms up here are like Porcelain Heaven.  Women up here do not territorially mark the seats with some primal hovering action. There are easy chairs in case there is a line for the make-up mirror or you need to hide from a vendor.

I would have been happy in the bathroom.

Downside: the real big kitchen where all of the Friday Food (read: left over box lunches, breakfast bagels from Paneera Bread) lives is one floor down.  I either have to take the stairs, which I’d rather do, or take the elevator.  Regardless I pass by the Receptionist every single time, unless I want to walk through other departments and have people wonder why I’m wandering around again.

Downside: I know only a handful of people up here, but the majority of them are in suits and nice clothing, so shopping is in order.  I hate shopping.

Downside: my back is to my opening, and I don’t like that.  I’ll have to get a small mirror so I can see people behind me.  It’s just proper feng shui, after all. Maybe a red fish too.  Maybe make a Maneki Neko.

I may not be up here for very long as arangements are still being made for me to be with my team on the floor below, but for now I will enjoy my beautiful cubical with it’s drawers for putting stuff in and boards for writing on and panels to tack stuff upon.

Being fired on February 16, 2007 was a crummy day indeed and I honestly felt worthless and small…

But …

This is what it led to, and I can put all of that crumminess into a box and wrap it with its own worthless tape and fling it into the nearest river.

Just this fox. I'm a writer of horror and dark fantasy. I totally don't brag about it. The latter statement is an utter lie.

Thanx for the goodreads widgit and for all your blogging over the past few years (I’ve been a silent reader). I’m back and getting re-familiarized.

    Welcome back!

I’m glad I haven’t made a complete fool of myself in your eyes. Heading over now to see what you’ve been up to.

But how do you really feel?
